Painting Highlights

Contemporary art painting for those interested in language, meaning and philosophy.

This painting is made up of 4 images. The top left is that of a brand of safe deposit box. Focusing on the feeling of security and strength with this one. I attempted to defuse the seriousness of the imagery by using colour.

The top right of this painting shows a butterfly image. I’m drawn to the symmetry of pattern and beauty of the butterfly’s wings, also drawing from their fragility and short-lived lives. Finally, I like that people collect and archive butterflies as treasures.

The bottom left of this painting is of a Skull. I have been drawing skulls for some time and find them fascinating. A strong sense of denial, refusing to perish, the skulls remain and remind us of our mortality.

The bottom right shows the image of a grenade repeated in the primary colours and overlayed in some kind of 70’s 3D promotional material. The idea is to diffuse the reality of the presented item by trying to hide its weight from the viewer. It is fear of the reality of the bomb and fascination with the pattern and engineering that keeps me returning to this grenade image.
